Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to look for when seeking a good child psychiatrist?

  • A background in developmental and behavioral theory and practice
  • A strong background in pediatrics is a plus
  • Up to date knowledge of medications, and their specific benefits and risks with children
  • A willingness to work with parents and teachers to best put together a “complete assessment” of your child.

How much will it cost to see the child psychiatrist?
The initial evaluation is typically completed in 2 – 2 ½ hours.  This initial evaluation is sometimes done over two days.  Total cost for the evaluation is $450.00.  This includes $300 for the first part of the evaluation, then $150 for the second visit.

How often will the child psychiatrist see my child?
Typically, after the initial assessment, the child psychiatrist will see your child monthly, for about ½ hour.  There is a $150 charge for these follow up visits.

Will the psychiatrist ever talk to me about my child?
Yes.  As part of the evaluation, you will be included in the sessions.  Further, Dr. Kershner will often spend sessions with parents, facilitating the “parenting work” that will, in turn, help decrease symptoms expressed by the child.

Will Dr. Kershner test my child to see if she is gifted?
Dr. Kershner works as part of a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals.  She works closely with a doctoral level professional who does psychological testing, and other licensed social workers who are available to provide psychotherapy.

Will Dr. Kershner prescribe medications?
Yes, if indicated.  Dr. Kershner will do a comprehensive assessment to determine if psychopharmalogical interventions would be helpful given the presenting problem.
